Restaurative Dentistry

Conservative or restorative dentistry is that which deals with the treatment of diseases of the hard dental tissues (caries) in all its phases, from the initial caries to the major destructions and fractures.

The principal treatment carried out in restorative dentistry consists of fillings, which for many years were done with silver filling materials and currently use composite resin (white fillings).

Occasionally, when the tooth cannot be repaired solely by means of a filling, because the tooth lesion is very extensive or is significantly weakening the dental architecture, restorative dentistry has to resort to other forms of treatment, such as for example: crowns (caps) or inlays (fragments of porcelain or resin cemented into the tooth to replace the missing tissue).

In cases of major dental destruction, we can sometimes restore the tooth by placing posts and cores. These structures are placed inside the root of the tooth, after first treating the tooth endodontically (see Endodontics) and at a later stage allow a crown to be placed over them.
