Oral Implantology
Oral implantology came into being with the discovery of osseointegration. This phenomenon allows a titanium implant to be placed inside a patient’s bone (as if it were a dental root) which after a time becomes completely encased in the bone structure.
This bone tissue accepts the titanium as if it actually formed part of the body structure, so that when one or more teeth are lost, these can be replaced, with the triggering of the biological stimulus that will cause the bone to be preserved, preventing the gradual reabsorption that would occur if there were neither teeth nor implants present.
In addition to triggering this function and slowing down the process of bone reabsorption, implants enable us to achieve an esthetic appearance similar to that of natural teeth, while avoiding the additional inconvenience of residual teeth that comes with other types of prostheses, for example removable ones like dentures, or fixed ones like bridges.
PHASES OF DENTAL IMPLANT TREATMENT.
1.Examination and diagnosis.
When you go to your dentist for the first time to talk about treatment using implants, you will have your medical history taken, and this will be followed by a thorough exploration of your mouth, after which casts will be made together with various imaging tests (X-rays, CAT scans, etc.).
2. First surgical phase.
In this first intervention, implants will be inserted into the bone (top or bottom jaw). Once inserted, the implants will remain buried in the bone, waiting the time needed for osseointegration (approximately 3-4 months), when they will also become covered with the gum.

After approximately 3 months (which will vary depending on the location of the implant and the type of bone in which it is seated), we will be able to start on the second surgical phase. This intervention is minimal and consists in making a small opening in the gum to connect the implants inside the bone with the oral cavity. To make this connection, we screw into the implant a titanium anchoring device called a healing abutment.

Approximately 15-20 days after the healing abutments have been placed we can start fitting the prostheses onto the implants. The procedure is straightforward and, basically, consists in replacing the healing abutment with the finished crown by means of a series of recordings taken with special implements.

Occasionally, while studying the case we might come across very dense bone, which means that the implants we place during surgery will be firmly anchored in it (good primary stability). In these cases, a temporary prosthesis can be placed immediately or at least within a few hours after the intervention.
This prosthesis will give you the right esthetic appearance, but with some functional limitations, as for a few days you must stick to a soft diet and avoid eating tough foods or ones that have to be cut with the teeth (baguette sandwiches, for example).
